Capetown born Skubalisto aka Skumbuzo Vabaza approach of style within graffiti has always been a unique experience of robust wild lines which end up creating the most delicate and yet hard surfaces and hard topics in current state of society. “Shadows of my Freedom” by Lazi Mathebula – JOZI

” For The past 2 and a half years, I felt I hit a glass ceiling, with what I was / am mostly known for. With that came a need for some kinda change. I knew there was a lot I could do as a creative but still felt like it wasn’t enough for me, since I felt I was being marginalized and that led to being put in a certain category that I felt I didn’t fit to cause I know I’m a bit more progressive than that. “

” The creative industry can be mediocre at times, especially when we base the metric of talent with influence through social media, popularity and being extroverted. A lot gets lost through this idea of popularity contest, cause we end up putting the lens on things that have nothing to do with the work. “

” So with this Journey I switch lanes, but keep the same car. What I’m about to present on the 18th Of January 2020 is What I call my “Illmatic” by @nas, my “college dropout” by Ye. My “Mad Villian” by @mfdoom. This is my Debut Album after have dropped so many singles and features. “

‘Study of Song Chicotte’ by BLESSING NGOBENI

Blessing Ngobeni’s exhibition ‘Study of Song Chicotte’ opens this Saturday, 18 January, at Everard Read’s CIRCA Gallery.

This new series of hand-coloured linocuts is based on Blessing’s 2016 exhibition at Everard Read’s CIRCA gallery, THE SONG OF THE CHICOTTE.

In this body of work Ngobeni has revisited that powerful series and reproduced the artworks from that seminal show in the medium of print. The linocuts offer a graphic reinterpretation of Ngobeni’s large, bold, and complex collages on canvas – rendering the familiar images in softer tones of blues, purples and greys.

‘Good Feelings’ DADA KHANYISA

STEVENSONS Johannesburg is pleased to present ‘Good Feelings’, a solo exhibition by Dada Khanyisa – their first in this city.

In this latest presentation in their ‘solution-based practice’ – described as nakanjani (‘by whatever means’) – Khanyisa fractures their narrative process, creating solipsistic scenes set against the backdrop of communal living. Fundamentally isolated yet deeply entwined, each character is depicted as self-contained, complex and variable in these new single-panel works. Khanyisa states:

“It’s about going out culture, but also going in culture – as in going into the self. And when you go in with yourself it’s easier to understand how you relate with others. That’s why I’m doing individuals – and when they’re together there’s a community.”

In ‘Good Feelings’ the artist also foregrounds place in an unprecedented way. Figures are sculpted waging confrontations across bar-style countertops, taking showers, taking selfies, sending voice notes, and seated at upscale restaurants. In other works the figure is absent, with lounges, kitchens and bedrooms presented as extensions of personhood.

The exhibition includes sketches in lieu of the scripted or multimedia elements previously used by the artist, and over the duration of the exhibition the works will be rearranged in alignment with their relational nature.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 1 February, 10am to 1pm.
